The Baikal Museum of the Siberian Branch of the
Russian Academy (Listvyanka) hosted the opening of the Underwater
Research on Lake Baikal: History and Modernity on July 1, 2010.
This unparalleled exhibition took organizers weeks to assemble. In
the end, the exhibition’s television screens and display stands
guided visitors through the entire history of the lake’s research,
showcasing the tools and equipment that scientist used to study the
lake from the middle of the 20th century through today.
An entirely separate section was devoted to the Baikal research
conducted by the Pisces and Mir manned submersibles, with the Mir
on Baikal International Research Expedition (2008 – 2010) section
of the exhibit drawing the event’s largest crowds. It featured an
enormous screen displaying underwater footage from previous Lake
Baikal submersions.
The event was organized by the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal.
