Organized by the Fund for the Protection of Lake Baikal and the Nature Museum of Buryatia, the Mir on Baikal exhibition held its grand opening in Ulan-Ude on July 6, 2010. The esteemed guests were welcomed by the National Choir of Buryatia, which sang to the visitors’ health and offered them traditional regional gifts – white “khadak” scarves and white-only food. The very first guests and media representative were treated to a special introductory tour through the exhibit, which was followed by speeches from the Republic of Buryatia’s Deputy Minister of Culture Sergei Dobrynin, its Minister of Natural Resources Bair Angabeyev, Ulan-Ude Mayor Gennady Aidayev, and M. V. Slipenchuk, Chairman of the Guardianship Board of the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal. The speakers noted the richness of the exhibition, highlighting its wealth of multimedia exponents and praising the enormous contribution made by its organizer – the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal. This marks the fourth occasion on which the event has come to Baikal, with the festivities not only making the subject of Lake Baikal research more popular with the public, but also going a long way to advancing the efforts of the unique Mir on Baikal expedition.
