On August 5 the Mir submersibles carried out a series of dives in the eastern part of Baikal, in the vicinity of the settlement of Turka.
The crew of Mir-1 consisted of Viktor Nischeta, operator of the vessel, Hatsuo Royama (Japan), President of the International Federation of Kyokushin-Kan Karate-Do, and Igor Kosov, General Director of OJSC OEZ. The crew of Mir-2, operated by Evgeny Chernyaev, included Mikhail Krasnoperov, employee of the Russian Consulate in Switzerland, and Ulrich Lemmin, a teacher from Switzerland.
During the submergence that lasted three hours the vessel reached the depth of 500 meters to carry out technological operations on an offshore slope. At the depth of 460 and 350 meters the explorers also collected soil samples for geochemical testing. They also performed a number of biological studies.
