On 15 September a two-day voluntary action “Clean Olkhon Island” – the final stage of the project “Save Baikal” in 2013 – was finished. The event took place within the framework of the All-Russian action on garbage collection “Let’s do it”. More than one hundred volunteers from Russia, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium and the United States participated in it. The Fund for the Protection of Lake Baikal has become one of the co-organizers of the action.
The action participants collected three tons of garbage – glass, plastic and metal.
The total area of the cleaned territory is 4 km². Also the problems on the distribution of unauthorized landfills in the coastal and forest area of Olkhon, the problem of its export outside the national park were studied at the event.
According to the initiators of the action, one of the key causes of environmental problem on the island is the poor knowledge by locals and tourists of the rules for waste management, the lack of a clear interaction between the local administration and public services.
