A Seminar on Complex Natural Resources Management in Cross-Border Ecosystem of Lake Baikal Basin with participation of Russian and Mongolian representatives was held in Ulan-Ude on November 21. The Baikal Nature Management Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, UNESCO, the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal and non-profit organisations were the invited participants of this seminar.
The discussion focused on issues regarding preservation of local biodiversity, management of the Selenga River catchment, water quality control. The participants also presented projects for utilization of waste, sustainable development of tourism, cooperation between scientific development and production centres and businesses and many others.
A representative of the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal B. Tsyrenov delivered a report on Biodiversity-Oriented Approaches to Mining. This project envisages allocation of funds to regional industrial enterprises for better management of water ecosystem and biodiversity of Lake Baikal, and ecologically friendly business planning in the mining industry.
