According to RIA-Novosti, the Russian Geographical Society (RGS)
keeps growing in strength, with the help of the Board of Trustees
and its Chairman, V.V. Putin. The RGS is creating its own social
network and Regional Boards of Trustees. The Society will get a new
building in Moscow, a marine research ship, and probably even some
submersible vehicles.
The RGS Board of Trustees met on Friday in Moscow. At the meeting,
the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin, for a
second time, awarded 11 RGS grants to the creators of educational
and geographic research projects.
The Russian Geographical Society was founded in 1845. Since that time, numerous unique expeditions were organized, and significant discoveries were made, with the society’s support. In November 2009, at an extraordinary RGS congress, the Head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, S.K. Shoigu was elected as the new RGS President, and the Prime Minister of Russia, V.V. Putin agreed to become the Chairman of the Society’s Board of Trustees. The Prime Minister promised «to do everything he could to help the organization».
At Friday’s meeting, in discussing the work of the regional offices, Mr. Putin noted that the extensive network of RGS regional offices would enable the Society to quickly react to local issues, maintain contacts with public authorities, organize groups of volunteers and involve the media. The Prime Minister also expects that «they will create and develop a network of Regional Boards of Trustees of the RGS».
«I emphasize once again, that the regional RGS development vector should become more significant. This is especially important both in the context of the already ongoing projects of the Society, and those that will be launched today», said the Prime Minister V.V. Putin.
The Prime Minister stated that currently there are 11 such
Regional Boards of Trustees, and he took special note of their work
in Khakassia, Buryatia, and the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District,
adding that Regional Boards of Trustees would soon be established
in the Kaluga Region, Transbaikal, Krasnodar Territory and Ivanovo
Region.
We should recall that the Board of Trustees of the Buryat Branch of
the Russian Geographical Society is headed by M.V. Slipenchuk,
General Director of the METROPOL Group of Companies and Chairman of
the Board of Trustees of the Fund for the Protection of Lake
Baikal, Doctor of Economics.
The Department Media Council is headed by Aleksander Georgievich Varfolomeev, General Director of the Buryat State TV and Radio Company. The Chairman of the Buryat Republic’s branch is A.K. Tulokhonov, Director of the Baikal Institute of Nature Management of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, professor, and corresponding member of the RAS.
