The Mir-1 manned submersible descends near Olkhon Island with a crew of Russian Federation Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin and Irkutsk Region Governor Dmitry Mezentsev.  The craft is piloted by the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal Technical Board Chairman and Hero of Russia Anatoly Sagalevich.  The three-hour submersion is used to sample the lake’s bottom and monitor its animal life.
