On May 12, 2011, at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Ulan Bator (Mongolia), the television film in the Mongolian language, entitled "To the Depths of Baikal”, was presented. This event was held with the participation of the Fund for the Protection of Lake Baikal (FPLB), the Russian Embassy in Mongolia, the Mongolian National Public Television, the Mongolian Academy of Science and the “Rossotrudnichestvo” Representative Office.
The Fund’s delegation was headed by Mikhail Slipenchuk, chairman of the board of trustees of FPLB, Bair Tsyrenov - vice president of FPLB, and Boris Danilov - director of FPLB. Within the framework of FPLB delegation’s visit to Mongolia, a meeting with the Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj was also organized.
The premiere screening of the film and the solemn events dedicated to the results of the ‘Mir Subs on Baikal’ Scientific Research Expedition were attended by the Gan-Erdene - Director of the Mongolian Science and Technology Fund, Victor Samoylenko - Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Mongolia, Tatyana Dumnova - Minister of Economy of the Republic of Buryatia, Bair Angaev - Minister of Natural Resources of the Republic of Buryatia, and other officials.
The television film “To the Depths of Baikal” was created on the basis of the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, with the participation of the Mongolian National Public Television. The audience had a chance to watch the rare beauty of the underwater survey, taken with the help of the “Mir” submersibles, and the picturesque landscape of Lake Baikal.
The film is scheduled for broadcasting on the Mongolian TV. The venue also included the conference “Baikal - the World’s Treasure”, in which participated leading Russian and Mongolian scientists, several photo exhibits were opened, art competitions dedicated to Lake Baikal were summarized and several specialized publications were presented. At the conference, the most important discoveries of the ‘Mir Subs on Baikal’ Expedition were presented - an expedition organized in 2008-2010 by the Fund for the Protection of Lake Baikal. The Deepwater Manned Submarines Mir-1 and Mir-2 were used for the first time in Lake Baikal, to study the bottom of this magnificent lake. The Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj was also among the honorary hydronauts.
The main FPLB projects for the year 2011 were also presented. At the press conference, that followed the presentation, the parties answered questions from Russian and Mongolian media representatives, and talked about the prospects of further cooperation in environmental protection between the two countries.
“In addition to the outstanding scientific discoveries made
during the ‘Mir Subs on Baikal’ Expedition (the accumulation of gas
hydrates at the bottom of the lake, etc.), we consider that one of
the most important outcomes of the ‘Mir Subs on Baikal’ Project was
that we made the issue of preserving this unique lake known not
only to the scientists and politicians of Russia, but also to the
world community”, said M.V. Slipenchuk, chairman of the board of
trustees of FPLB, during his speech.
