The two crews, which include scientists from the Limnology Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, collect biological and sediment samples and study the bay’s hydrothermal discharges and bacterial mats. They also inspect local fields of underwater sponges and use a special probe to measure geothermal conditions.
