The initiative to create the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal
belongs to Chairman of the Fund Board of Trustees M. Slipenchuk,
who voiced the concept of the future non-profit project on December
20, 2007. And on April 7, 2008 the Fund, the main objectives of
which are to support the research projects aimed at the
preservation of Lake Baikal, and facilitate the development of new
environmental technologies, received the Certificate of
Incorporation.
Since five years of the official activities many well-known
scientists, politicians and public figures have become active
partners of the Fund. For the undeniable achievements in scientific
research and environmental education the FPLB is elected as a
collective member of the Russian Geographical Society for the first
time in the history. Social, professional and international
recognition is expressed in tens of diplomas and appreciations that
the Fund has received.
Over these years dozens of large-scale projects of federal and
international level have been implemented. In addition to the
famous three-year international research expedition “Mirs at Lake
Baikal”, organized by the FPLB with the support of Russian Academy
of Sciences and the Russian Geographic Society there were held
several scientific expeditions in the north of Lake Baikal, in the
basin of Selenga river, hydrographic and biological winter
expedition at Baikal, a number of complex student
expeditions.
Dozens of environmental action in the Baikal region are organized
with the support and participation of the Fund: annual cleanups in
Ulan-Ude on Baikal Day, in Baikal and Kabanskiy region of the
Republic of Buryatia, many thousands of campaigns like “Pure
ice of Lake Baikal”, Charity Ecological Marathon "”Save Baikal by
the whole world” at the central stadium of Buryatia, etc. Every
year environmental camps in the North and Central Baikal work
thanks to FPLB.
Dozens of Russian and international exhibition projects about the
lake, organized by the Fund, were successfully held in Moscow, St.
Petersburg, Ulan-Ude, Irkutsk, Vladivostok, Novosibirsk, Ulan
Bator, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Monte Carlo, Geneva, Prague and other
cities. several international scientific conferences and forums has
been organized in Russia, France, Monaco, Mongolia and other
countries.
Information portal of the FPLB leads among scientific and
educational resources about Lake Baikal. At this popular web site
there is a unique scientific information, all-Russian contest “100
Wonders of Baikal” was conducted last year, the vote “Famous people
of Lake Baikal” is being prepared.
The FPLB published the collections of scientific articles
“Environmental management: traditions and innovations”, “Patom
crater”, “Baikal – the world treasure” and “Planet Baikal” (in two
languages). The film of the Fund “To the Depths of Lake Baikal”
participated in the competition program of three film
festivals.
