The Second International Conference “St. Petersburg – The Sea Capital of RUSSIA. Ecology” is being held in St. Petersburg on March 17-18. It marks the start of the “St. Petersburg Ecology Week”, whose events are directed at attracting the Russian and world community’s attention to ecological issues of our planet’s water resources, and seeking the formation of a uniform ecologically focused policy for the protection of water bodies.
More than 300 delegates, including, the management of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Exploitation, Federal Service for Water Resources, Federal Service for Fishing, profile committees of the State Duma Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, representatives of regional authorities of more than 35 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, of profile ministries, embassies and consulates from European and Asian countries will participate in the conference.
Representatives of intergovernmental ecological commissions, international non-governmental organizations on environmental protection (WWF, etc.), domestic and foreign scientific research institutes, and independent experts are also taking part in the event.
Within the framework of the conference, several working sessions will be held. These will include ecological safety in the extraction and transportation of oil and gas, ecology of the seas of the Arctic regions and the Far East, Baltic and Northern Seas, Caspian Sea and the Azov-Black Sea Basin, internal waters and trans-border rivers, as well as the modernization of sewage treatment processes.
The primary goals of the conference is the development of measures for the perfection of state policy in the field of water resources protection at the national level, and also the search for a common approach of Russia and other countries for finding solutions to water ecology issues. The resolutions, passed during the conference, will be forwarded to profile ministries and departments for the perfection of the legislative base in the sphere of environmental protection.
On March 17, the President and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of FPLB, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, A.N. Chilingarov spoke at the conference. After the speech, he visited the exhibition booth of the FPLB, which he heads.
