On 26 August, the “Mirs in Baikal” expedition operated in the
area of Posolskaya Banka. It took Mir deep submergence vessel more
than 9 hours to reach the depth of 620-681meters.
Scientists of the Institute of Limnology of the Siberian Branch of
the Russian Academy of Sciences on board Mir-1 vessel (piloted by
Victor Nischeta) conducted geological studies of ancient sediments
at various depths and took biological samples.
The crew aboard Mir-2 deep submergence vessel piloted by Evgeny
Chernyaev carried out a biological research on the behavior of
crustaceans in the lake. Besides, the scientists explored the
bottom of the lake in the attempt to find an outcrop of ancient
lake sediments which are several millions of years old.
